MUMBAI: Yamaha at a press meeting on April 16th 2013 said it was in the
making of “the world’s cheapest bike” in India to be sold for $ 500, as they
look at launching it around the world too.
As the launch date is not finalized, but they say their research team has
been working on the low cost 100cc engine bike at The company,of Yamaha
motors Research and Development India Pvt Ltd [YMRI] their research center
located at Surajpur in U.P India. They produce 400,000 bikes currently but
target to reach the one million mark by 2014
Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO Yamaha India told at a press meet in New Delhi, Making
the product here is cost effective and helps us to keep up the competition with
other makers in India. "The target is to make the cheapest bike at around
$ 500 for India and other export markets" said senior Yamaha R&D
Manager Tosikazu Kobayashi.
He said the company is planning to sell 7. 4 lakh units of bikes and
Scooters this year. Including 2.3 lakh of exports. Yamaha had sold a total of
4.9 in 2012, He says their aim to sell 10 Lakh units by 2015 which include
exports too. Where the market is pegged around 18 million units. He said: “WE
have around 80 Engineers in Surajpur [YMRI]
Yamaha is looking at targeting the below average society bike commuters, by
making the cheapest bike for the average community. As bike is one of the main sources
of commuting in India, people living in cities, towns and villages use a bike
to travel to places or work. Most of the people needs more mileage in comfortable price. The yamaha planned to launch his bike first in India and then to Africa,
Latin America and then to the world factory
But some top companies have doubt about a low budget bike meant Korean
